When you start thinking about updating your home, one of the first questions that usually comes up is colour.
For a long time, grey has been the go-to. It’s clean, modern, and easy to work with – which is why so many kitchens, bedrooms, and living spaces across Durham and the North East have followed that direction.
But more recently, we’ve been having a different kind of conversation with clients.
More people are now drawn to warmer tones – taupes, soft browns, natural wood finishes – colours that bring a bit more depth and a more relaxed feel into the space.
So the question we’re often asked is: which one should I go for?
The honest answer is, it depends on your home – and how you want it to feel.
Grey still works incredibly well when it’s used in the right way. In spaces with good natural light, it can create a clean, balanced look that feels modern without being overdone. It’s also a great option if you want something that’s neutral and easy to build around over time.
On the other hand, warmer tones tend to soften a space. They can make a room feel more inviting, particularly in areas where you spend a lot of time – whether that’s a kitchen, bedroom, or living area. We’re finding that many homeowners now want that slightly more relaxed, lived-in feel, rather than something that feels too sharp or clinical.
What’s important, though, is not to look at colour in isolation.
When we sit down with clients at our Durham showroom, the conversation quickly moves beyond “grey or warm.” We look at how the space is used, how the light moves through it, and how different materials will work together.
Because the reality is, the success of a design doesn’t come down to one decision. It’s how everything connects – the layout, the storage, the lighting, the finishes – and how that all fits into your day-to-day life.
A grey scheme with the right lighting and materials can feel warm and welcoming. A warmer palette, if overused or not balanced properly, can feel heavy. That’s where careful design makes the difference.
At Dragonville Interiors, we’ve been designing and fitting bespoke interiors across Durham and the North East for decades, and one thing has always stayed the same – the best results come from understanding the home first, not following a trend.
Some clients come to us set on grey. Others are already leaning towards warmer tones. Most sit somewhere in between, and that’s where a proper design conversation really helps.
If you’re at that stage – weighing up options and trying to picture what will work – the best thing you can do is see materials in person and talk it through properly.
