Cookware items you should ideally avoid putting in a dishwasher
For many homes a dishwasher has often been a lifesaver – not only do they give us sparkling clean dishes and cutlery, they do save us a lot of time in the kitchen which would have been spent at the sink.
Although dishwashers are super handy for ceramic dishes and silverware, there are some things you should avoid putting in your dishwasher. Dishwashers are actually not meant hold all of our kitchen items. Did you know that, some of them can actually be damaged by being put through a washing cycle?
Cast Iron Pots & Pans
Firstly, cast iron pots and pans should be hand-washed only. These items often have a rough patina/seasoning within the pan’s surface, this can actually be ruined in the dishwasher. Ideally you should remove stuck on bits of food by rinsing the cast iron pan using warm soap-free water and a brush. When the cast iorn pan is washed ensure it is completely dry, this helps keep the pan from rusting.

They can be abrasive and depending on the type of detergent used, the actual washing process can lead to rust or even corosion on the knife’s blade.
Thermal coffee cups
Putting your thermal coffee cups in the dishwasher, could make them loose their effectiveness. Travel mugs can lose their airtight properties after being in the dishwasher. This compromises the consistent temperature which makes the mugs lose efficiency.
Wooden chopping board and utensils
Wooden chopping boards and utensils should be avoided in a dishwasher. Hot water. within a dishwasher can actually warp the wooden material and even cause it to crack. In addition, they can make the wood appear more dull looking.
Cutlery, Glassware and Crockery
Keeping your cutlery, glassware and crockery looking its best is important. Therefore looking after your appliance is equally important. Cleaning your dishwasher correctly is there first step, whilst regularly adding dishwasher salt and rinse aid to it.
