Help reduce your costs with home appliances
Help reducing the costs of your home appliances
Washing Machine
Using your washing machine more carefully, can help save you money on your electric each year.
- Wash clothes on a 30 or 20 degree cycle instead of higher temperatures
- Try to reduce the amount of cycles you do per week
- Where possible try not to use a tumble dryer, instead use racks or hang outside in warmer weather
- Use shorter cycles, for clothing that isnt that dirty.
- Wait until you have a full load before running a cycle.
Boiling the Kettle
Kettles are one of the most used applicances in a kitchen. However, many of us boil the kettle with more water than we actually need.
By avoiding overfilling the kettle you can save money on your electricity bill, just add enough for the cups of tea or coffee you are making.
Cleaning the dishes
When using a dishwasher wait until it is full, this will help save too on your electric bill.
Unplug appliances instead of using standby
Did you know that the average UK household spends £65 a year by leaving appliances on standby? Unplug any appliances or devices you
are not using. Most electric appliances can be turned off at a plug without affecting their programming. Things to consider are a standby saver or smart plug which allows you to turn off all your standby appliances in one go.
Choosing the times you are using your home appliances
Your home appliances may be cheaper to run on certain tarrifs so ensure you check with your supplier as this can be a great cost saving exercise.
For example, Economy 7 charges you:
- A cheaper price for electricity 7 hours a day — usually from midnight to 7am
- An above average price for the rest of the day
However, don’t run appliances like washing machines or tumble dryers when you’re asleep — in the unlikely event that they could catch fire. You could use a timer to set them to come on in the morning when you are ready to get up or just before the off-peak price of electricity ends.
Energy Monitors
With a plug-in energy monitor it plugs into a socket, then you plug your appliance into the energy monitor.
This is an ideal tool which shows you how much electricity the appliance is using. This can either be done on a screen on the monitor itself or through a smartphone app.
With some of these monitors they let you enter the rate you pay for your electricity. Meaning they can show you how much the electricity is actually costing you.
